The "Cushing" Model Build Page 1

June 2011

After finally working out a reasonable set of plans for the TARDIS from the two Peter Cushing "Dalek" movies, I first built a rough "proof of concept" model out of thin card.  I got so far as two roof stacks then sat back and looked at it.

It looked quite like the AARU TARDIS prop.  So the plans seemed sound (which you can see here: Dave's Cushing Plans).  Whatever I was going to end up making would probably look OK.

Right, here goes.  First of course the 4 faces, with those interminable windows.  The Cushing TARDIS is a strange design.  Sort of like a "stretched" Met Box, it has wider doors.  So these 4 sides are actually easier to make than I'd imagined.  Far less fiddly.  Once they're cut out and glued together I have to paint the window frames.  This takes two days - first day white primer, then let it dry for 24 hours, second day white acrylic,  then dry for 24 hours.  Boooring....

Let the light shine in

It's well phat!

Lots of struts in this one

Unlike the BBC prop, you can see through all eight windows of the AARU Tardis to an all-white interior.  I'm going to do the same.  Although my windows will be fairly opaque, they will still let light through.

After the four sides are attached, and lots of struts added to prevent any bowing, the top and floor are glued on.

Thicker Corner Posts

Although I've created plans for this version of TARDIS, I'm still discovering new things about the prop and basically refining the build as I go on.  For example I've taken a closer look at the corner posts in my screen-shots and come to the conclusion that they're quite thick.  Translating that to the model means adding another layer of card to build them up.

The Lamp is now on

As I've already said, I'm making it up as I go along. The corner posts don't look right, so I remove the first layer of card and replace it with a slightly wider one.  Looks better.  Next I get the sign boxes on.  They're actually a little bit thinner than they should be, but there's not a lot I can do about that now.  Anyway, it looks very nice so far, and I can't wait to start painting!  Roof next.
